Hello Gwen,

My name is Susan MacAlpine, and I believe we met some years ago, when I started my search into the  Landenberger family history. I don't know if you remember me or not. I am the grand-daughter of Hilda  Therese Landenberger, and I think I was introduced to you by Robert Lane.

It has been about 10 years since we met, and I came across an email profile for you when I was searching for the Landenberger name on the internet.

I have been lucky enough to track down some quite detailed history of the family and I thought you might be interested in having some of the information.

If this is the case could you please contact me and I will try to sought out some appropriate file to transmit the information to you. I could save the data as a gedcom file, or as a word processing file. You might let me know which would be better for you.

Regards Susan

Dear Gwen, thank you for responding to my message. I know the problems with time and how difficult it is to fit things into a busy schedule. I tend to do things in fits and starts, when I get a little time. For many years I did nothing about organising my family history notes, but a while ago I tried to start putting the notes into a proper database programme, with varying success.

I can’t remember when it was that I saw you although it was over 10 years ago. I thought it might help you to give a short outline of what I know of the family background, but if this is all repetition, apologies in advance.

In 1988 I went to Riedlingen in Wuerttemberg which is the town where our great-grandfathers were born. I couldn't find any gravestones or anything else but I saw the local town authorities and there was a very helpful woman who told me that a researcher was going through the records of the local church and that she would ask him to look at the records and see what he could find about the Landenberger family.

Some months later I received a letter confirming the dates of birth of all of the children in the family and the details of two further generations (the parents and grand-parents).

This took me back to the marriage of Johann Martin Landenberger and Christiane Dorothea Färber in Esslingen in 1810 and I could not take it any further on the Landenberger line. For the Korn family it went back to the birth of Karoline in 1834 in St Wendlin in the Saar area of Germany and the names of her parents (Christian Korn and Elizabeth Weitzel).

I was stuck at this point for so long that I thought that would be the end of it. However last year I decided to post a query on a newsgroup to see if I got any response. To my surprise I did. I am not sure who the person is, but he seems to be an active genealogist who responds to many postings on the German interest newsgroups. He gave me quite a lot of information which took the Landenberger line back to the marriage of Johann Jakob Landenberger and Anna Maria Rominger in 1656. This takes the family back to the town of Ebingen (now known as Albstadt-Ebingen or just Albstadt), to the east of Riedlingen and apparently the centre for the Landenberger family in Wuerttemberg.

At this stage he indicated that there were records which took the line back much further but would involve him in many hours of research. I didnt want to ask him to do this and I have not asked him for any further help.

I have created a gedcom file that has this information in it and I am sending it as an attachment to this email.

I am planning a holiday for April and I hope to have time to make a detour to Ebingen. If anything comes out of it I will let you know.

There were a couple of favours I would like to ask of you.

The first is that amongst my grandmothers papers were a number of photographs and letters from a Helena Landenberger and her sister "Wonty", I think around the time of the first world war. Helena was the daughter of Karl Rudolf Charles) and Caroline, but we do not know who Wonty is. Does this nickname mean anything to you?

Another photo from my grandmother shows a group of German army officers and servicemen in uniform. Someone has written in the name Otto above the head of one of the officers. Our great-grandfathers had one brother Otto who remained behind in Germany instead of emigrating with the rest of the family. We have assumed that this photo is of the same Otto, but know nothing more of him. Has he ever been discussed in your family or is there someone still alive who would know of him?

Finally I have only sketchy information on the Landenberger family in Australia after the first generation was born here. If you could send to me a gedcom file which might fill in the gaps, I would really appreciate it.

I look forward to hearing from you, Regards Susan.

Hi Gwen,

Thanks very much for the info in your last message, but I could not open the attachment file. I use an IBM compatible with the Family Tree Maker software. It could not handle the file you sent me as an attachment. I have downloaded a Reunion Player programme from one of the web sites but it can only handle Reunion "transfer" (**.rtx) files.Could you send me the information in this format if it is not too difficult.

Could you read the gedcom file I sent? If not please let me know and I will extract information into a plain text file that you can at least read.

On a more general front, I am pretty sure that it was the beginning of 1988 when met you, as I remember it was very hot, and I think your mother was visiting you at that time. I went overseas for about 6 months from March 1988, and it was on that trip that I went to Riedlingen.

Unfortunately I dont have a scanner to give you a copy of the letter that I got from the town authorities, which was very useful. If you would like me to post a photocopy this would be no problem, if you let me have an address.

I also have some photos of the town if you would like copies.

As I said dad has been going through my grandmothers papers and there is quite a lot for Matilde in the bundles of letters and photos as she lived with my grandmother for some time. It seems that grandma took her personal things. There are also the photos of Helena and Wonty, who were sisters grandfather (if I have the generations worked out properly). There are no photos of  your great-grandfather that we can find.

There are quite a few letters and postcards, but the writing is very hard to read, particularly the ones in German. I am trying to decipher what has been written, but I have trouble finding the time. Most were written either by  Matilde or to her. It seems that she lived in New Zealand for about 8-10 years from 1905 to 1914. Its only a guess but this seems to come shortly after the death of our gg-grandmother.

My grandmother had told me some years ago that the marriage of her parents was arranged when an aunt living in New Zealand introduced my g-grandmother Amelia Englert to my g-grandfather Julius Landenberger. The aunt was on the Landenberger side and was Aunt Weitzel who I assume was related to Caroline Korn (Landenberger) as this was her mother's maiden name.

There was an ongoing connection between the Englert family and the Weitzels, as the Weitzel name comes up in letters around the time of WW1. Unfortunately its a bit like a jigsaw with a lot of the pieces missing. If I can put together anything of substance I will pass it onto you.

I'm not sure if I said in my last note to you that I am planning a holiday in April, which will let me have a week  in Germany. I want to go to Ebingen as I will be near Stuttgart and it is not too far away. I'm not sure what if anything remains of the old town buildings, but there is a chance that some remnants are there.Let me know if you would like me to do a second print of any photos or the like.

Regards Susan.

Gwen, sorry for taking so long to get back to you.

I've been back from holidays for quite a few months, but the last two months have been a bit of  a mess. In early October I had a problem with my computer and I wasn't using my email at that time. Then I had to go into hospital to have gall stones removed.

I am still trying to catch up on things.

I did try to contact you around June/July but your email bounced.

The trip went  really well, but like all things more time would have been better. I was trying to sandwich the trip to Ebingen between St Petersburg and Uzbekistan, but I did find out quite a lot as well as seeing Ebingen where the Landenberger family originated.

I can't remember now which information I gave you before, so there might be some duplication in what I have now. If so, please excuse me.

When I got the main information on the Ebingen history of the family, it stopped for our direct line, at Hans Jacob Landenberger who was born in 1632, although I had found a line back to some earlier generations through one of the maternal links.

Just before I left for Germany I got some further information from Guenther Schweizer (the German professor who had given me the earlier information). It closed the gap between Hans Jacob (also described as Johann Jacob) and the earlier generations. The information was in the form of the direct line back to Stoffel Landenberger who is the first recorded member of the family in Ebingen.

However none of the information I had covered the brothers and sisters of the direct ancestors, so it was hard to work out what sought of families there were.

When I went to Ebingen it took me a while to find where to ask questions, but I finally found the main library and an archives office which gave me quite a lot on the history of the town. I even managed to buy a very detailed history written by the previous archivist, but its all in German. I am trying to translate small portions of it which relate to the Landenbergers and others in our family history, but this will take me a long time I think.

The history does confirm that Stoffel Landenberger was the founder of the family, and he is mentioned as being there from about 1535.

The other main discovery or find for me was the family book of the

Landenbergers written in 1939. This was the book that Felix Landenberger referred to in his email to you. Unfortunately there are no copies to buy because it was published so long a go, but I did find a copy in a library in Stuttgart. The library is only open a couple of hours a week, and is part of the regional genealogical society. I did photocopy the pages which dealt with our line. The book is mainly a listing of each generation which marriages and children of each known descendant, but it stops at the marriage of a daughter, so that only children bearing the family name are recorded.

The first generation is Jacob Landenberger, who is the only known son of Stoffel. Our great-grandparents are in the tenth generation. The book records the details of their birth and the notation that they emigrated. For your great-grandfather the entry is

"Karl Rudolf Landenberger

* 4.11.1858 in Riedlingen, ging nach England"

(* = born, going to England)

There is nothing further for the next generation.

I have put this information into the database I keep on the family and I will attach to this message a text printout of the information. If you would like, I will also try a gedcom file, but I remember that our systems are not that compatible.

The only other information that I have been able to dig up is a little more on the family of Christiane Dorothea Färber, who is the grandmother of our great-grandfathers, and a little on Karoline Korn their mother. This is shown in the attachment.

The more I think about it I believe that Karoline's family probably

travelled to England with her around 1848 (which was the time of the

upheavals in Germany) mainly because of her age. There is no mention of her family in St Wendel after 1834 when she was born, and they do not appear to have been a local family. The fact that her father Christian was a customs officer may mean that when that part of the Saar Land was transferred from one of the Saxon royal family to the Prussians in about 1834, the family left the region, but I haven't got any idea where they could have gone.

However I can't imagine that a teenage girl would have travelled to England by herself in the late 1840s, and she was just short of her nineteenth birthday when she married in London in 1853.

The only other news I have is that a couple of months ago I was contacted by Sandra Griffiths, who apparently is a grand-daughter of Dolly Landenberger and Edward Toovey. Sandra found my name on an internet bulletin board, from when I posted a query about the Landenberger family in Germany.

She apparently had some information from her aunt, Pam, which was very similar to the information that I passed onto you earlier this year. I have promised to send more details to her, but haven't finished it yet because of the computer problems I had earlier. I will have to post it because she doesn't use email. I will ask her if there are any gaps she can fill in.

I would love to have whatever information you can pass on from Aunty Gladys and Aunty Minah.

That’s about it for now

Susan
